Editing an existing page

Change text, images, and buttons while keeping your page layout consistent.

← All website guides

  1. Sign in using the login link supplied for your website.
  2. If you have several sites, check the site name and address first. Use My Sites to switch dashboards.
  3. Open Pages → All Pages. Search by title if needed.
  4. Select the page title or Edit. Quick Edit changes details such as the title and status; it does not open the page content.

WordPress editor toolbar with block inserter, document overview, settings and publish controls

Editor toolbar: use + to add blocks, the three-line overview icon to find sections, and Settings to show Page or Block options. Click the image for a larger view.

The main canvas contains your content. The top bar contains Block Inserter (+), Undo, Document Overview, View, Settings, and the save controls.

Open Document Overview → List View to see the page structure. A section may contain Columns → Inner Column → Heading / Paragraph / Image / Buttons. Select the smallest block you need rather than its surrounding column.

The right-hand Settings panel has two tabs:

  • Page: whole-page details, featured image, link/slug, parent, template, and custom page fields.
  • Block: settings for the selected item. Stackable blocks may have additional design controls.

Text: click the existing paragraph or heading and edit the words. Keep heading levels consistent; use section headings below the main page title.

Images: select the image block and use its replacement control to choose from the Media Library or upload a new file. Check alternative text, crop, and mobile appearance. Replacing the image in one block is different from deleting a file from the library.

Buttons and links: select the button or linked text and use its link control. Check both the label and destination. A useful label describes the destination, such as “View our programs”.

Sections: use List View to select the correct container before moving or duplicating it. If you duplicate a section, replace its text, images, and links. Changing a synced pattern can affect other places that use it; ask for help if you are unsure.

52Hz Page Hero panel showing subtitle, button text and button URL fields

These fields control the introductory hero section. They are separate from the page’s content blocks.

On sites with 52Hz Page Hero, open the Page settings and expand that panel. The page title is supplied automatically. Hero subtitle controls the introduction; optional Button text and Button URL control the hero link.

In the inspected 52Hz layout, a Featured image creates a split hero with the image on the right. Leaving it empty creates a centred text hero. Other templates and home pages may behave differently. Preview your page rather than assuming every layout uses these fields.

Page Background Colour, where available, changes that page’s background. Use the theme default unless your design calls for a specific colour.

  1. Use View/Preview to check the page before saving. Review text, spacing, links, images, and phone-width layout.
  2. For a published page, select Save (called Update in some versions). This makes your changes live.
  3. Open View Page and check the public result. Previewing alone does not publish changes.

Use Undo for an immediate mistake. For saved content, open Page → Revisions, compare versions, and restore the appropriate revision if available. Do not assume revisions restore every custom field or site-wide setting.

Cannot find the header or footer here? Those may belong to a shared template or menu. Ordinary page changes should stay in Pages; contact 52Hz Media for shared layout changes.

List View expanded through Columns and Inner Column to headings, paragraphs and buttons

Expand the chevrons beside Columns and Inner Column to find the individual Heading, Paragraph, or Button. Selecting the parent container affects a larger section.

  1. Open the page and turn on Document Overview → List View.
  2. Expand the relevant Columns or Group until you find the Heading or Paragraph you want. Selecting a container selects the whole section; keep expanding until the individual text block is selected.
  3. Click inside the text on the canvas. Select only the words you want to replace. Paste plain text if copying from Word or an email so unwanted formatting does not come across.
  4. Keep a heading as a Heading block and a paragraph as a Paragraph block. Large bold text is not a substitute for a properly structured heading.
  5. For a new paragraph, press Enter in a normal paragraph block. A line break inside the same paragraph is usually Shift+Enter. Avoid adding many empty paragraphs to create spacing.
  6. Preview and read the surrounding section as well as your changed sentence. A longer heading can change wrapping and the height of a card.
  7. Save, wait for the saved confirmation, and open View Page to verify the live text.

Example: change a programme description from “Drop in every Tuesday” to “Drop in every Tuesday at 10 am”. Edit the paragraph in that programme’s column rather than selecting and replacing the entire Columns section.

  1. Select the linked words or the Button block. Open the link control in its toolbar or block settings; the location varies between core and Stackable buttons.
  2. Review the existing destination before replacing it. For another page, search for the intended page if the link picker supports it, or paste its complete public address.
  3. Confirm/apply the link in the control. Simply typing an address and clicking elsewhere may leave it unapplied.
  4. Check the visible label. “Read the handbook” should lead to the handbook, not a general home page.
  5. Preview, follow the link, and check the destination. For a link to another site, verify that you used the live site rather than a staging or archive address.

Use the site’s existing link behaviour unless you have a reason to change it. Opening every link in a new tab can make navigation harder, particularly on phones.

  1. Select the Image block in the canvas or List View.
  2. Use Replace, or the equivalent image picker in the Block settings. Choose an existing Media Library item or upload the replacement.
  3. Check the image’s purpose and alternative text. For a photograph illustrating an activity, describe the relevant activity rather than the filename.
  4. Check whether the block crops the picture to a fixed shape. A suitable landscape image may work better than a tall portrait in a wide card.
  5. If a focal-point control is available, position the important part of the image where the crop keeps it visible.
  6. Preview at different widths. Text wrapping and image crops can differ from the editor canvas.

If the old image is still used elsewhere, leave it in the Media Library. Changing the library item’s metadata is different from replacing one use of the image.

Stackable Columns block settings with Layout, Style and Advanced tabs

The Block tab controls the selected container. Column counts, widths, wrapping, and spacing change the layout; they are separate from editing the words inside a child block.

For a whole section, select its outer container in List View and check that the highlighted content includes everything you intend. Use its block options to duplicate or remove it; movement controls vary by block and editor version.

After duplicating, replace every copied heading, paragraph, picture, button destination, and any HTML anchor used for page jumps. Otherwise the new section may still send visitors to the original destination or introduce duplicate anchors.

Remove a single card by selecting the intended inner column or card, not the entire row. Use Undo immediately if too much disappears. When a block is locked, do not unlock the layout just to make a text change; select its editable child or ask for help.

What you see What to check
The main title or introduction is missing from the canvas Check the Page title and 52Hz Page Hero settings; the template may generate the hero.
A calendar or document list shows placeholder content Its entries may be managed in Events or Documents. Edit the source content rather than replacing the display block.
The editor shows a selected border or block label Editing outlines are not normally part of the public page. Preview to check the real appearance.
A saved change is not visible Confirm the saved message, the exact page URL and site, then refresh the public page. Ask 52Hz Media about caching if the mismatch continues.
Another person is editing the same page Coordinate the work before taking over. Avoid saving competing copies of the same page.

Page settings showing Template, Discussion, Revisions and Parent

Open the number beside Revisions to review saved content versions. The number varies by page. Restoring a revision should be followed by checking the public page.

Use Undo while still in the current editing session. If you already saved an unwanted content change, open Page settings and the Revisions link, compare the available versions, and restore the one you need. Re-check the page after restoration. Revisions may not cover every plugin field or a change made to a menu or template.

For a missing page, check Pages → Trash, if available, before recreating it. Ask an administrator to restore it if you do not have permission. Permanent deletion and database-level recovery should be handled by your website administrator.
